The importance of trees in purifying the air, as natural resources, maintaining the ecological balance, preventing soil erosion, as medicines, habitats for faunal species, providing nutrients to the soil etc. is well known. With this view, HOPE has decided to plant as many trees as possible every year and increase the fast depleting green cover.
There is a major difference between tree plantation done by HOPE and tree plantation done by most in general. HOPE not only plants the tree but also maintains it for few years to make sure that it becomes a big tree. Everyone knows that maintaining a plant is the most difficult, expensive and time consuming activity, particularly when it is planted in a public area. Following is the HOPE way of tree plantation:
• |
All location are carefully identified so that it benefits society in general like school and college grounds, hospitals, main road of the city etc. |
• |
All plants used for plantation are at least two years old and five feet tall. HOPE has its own nursery where small plants are maintained in bags for two years and used for plantation only if it is healthy and reaches certain height. These way the growth of the plant is much faster and the survival ratio is close to 100%. |
• |
All plants are well guarded, using tree guard and fence, from human, animals and vehicle traffic. |
• |
All plants are regularly watered. This is the most expensive and difficult task as plantation covers wide areas spread across different region. |
• |
Inspection and replacement of plants is done on a regular basis. |
